And so it began… after a slight hiccup, the extra big digger arrived on site on Monday 10th May, and the serious work began. Aside from genuine excitement that the house build had started, the first week was all about keeping our fingers crossed that not too much rock would be found close to the surface, but equally that they wouldn’t need to dig down too far to find a solid enough surface to build from.
In addition to the rock, due to our house being built on a hill, there was the challenge of dealing with a difference in ground height between the front and back of the house of almost a couple of metres. All these ‘unknowns’ definitely a challenge for someone like me who likes things to be planned and have control – not least over costs.
And the outcome: nothing too challenging, just slightly more rock on each side of the house plot and the solid rock in the middle a bit lower down than anticipated. Also a bit more rock where the garage will be. All manageable, a bit of contingency needed (as was always expected), and certainly not nearly as bad as the scenarios that we’ve woken up imagining for the past few weeks.
Definitely no going back now!
